How to choose how many batteries to install on a Solar PV system

1- First We have to consider how much power you use, this can roughly be calculated by taking the amount of monthly units and dividing it by 30/31 and dividing that by 24hours. OR we can come install an energy meter for you

2- Then we have to determine, how long you need backup for. Maybe only for two or so hours to get over load shedding. Or maybe you want a complete off-grid solution, getting rid of Eskom altogether.

3- BATTERY Lifespan is directly linked to how much power you take from it. Your batteries might last up to 10 years if you only use 20% of them each day, but only 3-5 years if you use 50% of them.

For Example...

Our 1.5kw system above comes with 4 x 100ah batteries. If you use 50% of them each day, they can supply 3kw of power for around 1.2 hours only. If you use only 1.5kw, they will last 2.4hours. These batteries might only last around 3 years. If you double the amount of batteries you half the load on them and essentially doubles their lifespan.

Battery replacement might get a little expensive every few years, especially if you don't install enough of them upfront. HOWEVER with technology improving, hopefully batteries will become less expensive and more efficient.
